Greater Accra Bissa FC on Tuesday made it to the last 16 stage of the Zongo Inter-tribal Gala despite losing to the Mossis in a penalty shootout after drawing 0-0 in regulation time.
A community football with an historical father and son affair ended in a deadlock and the two had to be separated by a thrilling penalty shootout that saw coaches of both sides sitting on tentahookes.
But it was the Mossis who had the last laugh with a 4-3 victory to gain qualification to the round of 16.
The Bissas, though disappointed, have also earned qualification as one of the best 6 teams from the first round contest based on goal differences.
It was the ninth match of the competition which is in its second edition.
And it came with a nerve-racking display of soccer that saw players of both sides giving off their best to protect and defend their ethnic pride. Neither the “father” nor the “son” was going to allow the other to take him for a ride.
After huffing and puffing by the outfield players, it was the goalkeepers who determined the outcome of the game.
Crucial saves from goalkeeper Faisal Alhassan Yunus Zampaligiri kept the Bissas in the game from a stubborn and dominant Mossi side.
But on a fewer occasions that the Bissas had threatened the Mossi goal area, it was thier goalkeeper Yussif Kinga, who equally pulled some spectacular saves to exhibit his agility in post.
Both keepers saved one each of the five kicks while the third hit from the Bissas flew an inch over the cross bar for a painful fatherly defeat.
Per history, it was a Bissa man who gave birth to a Mossi child but on the Kanda Cluster of Schools park on Tuesday, it was the Babies who run supreme over their fathers.
Despite their defeat to their sons, Bissas have still booked qualification to the next stage of the competition for being among the six gallant losers.
Twenty teams are participating in second edition of the Greater Accra Zongo inter-tribal Gala of which six of the best losers will join the ten victors for the last 16 stage.
The Second edition of the tournament began on the 14th of February has so far seen 15 teams qualify to the next stage.
The last of the first round matches will be honored Wednesday afternoon between Sisalas and Akans to determine the 16th team to join the next stage, which starts on Thursday 24th.
