Bissa Development Association (BDA) has announced special social media handles for the Zekula Festival, creating a unique hashtag for the grand event to be held on May 6 in Kulungungu.
It forms part of a bid to enhance its engagements with members of the public in promoting the biggest festival in the Upper East region, urging Bissas who are active on the various social media platforms to like and follow.
It comes just 19 days ahead of the 2023 edition of the festival, which is to be staged at the traditional Bissa capital town of Kulungungu.
The new social media handles were announced in a statement by the BDA Special Officer on Culture, Mr. Aliu M. Bawure Sewune, on Monday, April 17.
“With a few days to go, Bissas on social media pages such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Tiktok will be receiving daily updates about the festival, which comes off on May 6,” he said.
“These are special handles created only for the festival as part of our moves to engage with members of the public promote the event.
“We have not celebrated this festival for a very long time, for obvious reasons.
“But the countdown is on now, and with our hugely active youth on social media, we will expect every Bissa to like and follow for the daily updates with the same username across all the pages.”
He announced the #zekulafest2003 as he listed the new social media handles as follows:
Twitter: @zekulafest
Facebook: @zekulafest
Instagram: @zekulafest
Tiktok: @zekulafest
Zekula, in the Bissa language, means unity, and the festival is celebrated to renew and sustain togetherness amongst the Bissa people of the Upper East region of Ghana.
#Zekukafest2023 will be the first in four years since the festival began.
Events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the tribal conflict between neighboring mamprusis and kusasis have been the reasons the Bissa leadership chose to call off the celebration since 2020.
It comes with the theme “Promotion peaceful coexistence with neighbours ethnic groups through culture.”
The festival attracts thousands of people from the Bissa community beyond the shores of Ghana, as people from neighboring Burkina Faso, Togo, Benin, and the Ivory Coast normally visit the venue to witness the gigantic Ghanaian festival established by the chiefs and people of the Bissa ethnic group to promote unity and development through culture.
