Ghana’s Ministry of Youth and Sports has joined thousands to mourn the loss of former Minister Dr. Mustapha Ahmed, who passed away at the age of 63 on Wednesday.
It comes just a day after the death of the late Dr. Ahmed, who briefly headed the ministry during his time in public office, was announced.
The ministry joins a long list of sportsmen and women who have paid tributes to honour the memory and service of the Bissa man.
In a statement issued on Thursday, February 8th, the ministry described his passing as “difficult news” while pledging to honour the late Minister for his devotion to country.
“The late former sports minister served diligently during his tenure as Minister of Youth and Sports, even though he was the minister to have served for the shortest period in the Sports Ministry,” the Ministry said.
“The late Dr. Mustapha Ahmed was also the Member of Parliament for the people of the Ayawaso East constituency from 2001 to 2013.”
The Ministry, in its statement, also offered its deepest condolences to Dr. Ahmed’s family during this difficult time of grief.
“We would like to send our deepest condolences and assure his family that our prayers and thoughts are with them during this difficult period of grief. May his soul rest in perfect peace in the bosom of the Lord,” they said.
Astute sports broadcaster Kofi Asare Brako also described him as a “humble man,” while football writer Sheikh Tourphic Sienu says he has “lost a father, a companion, a friend, a comrade, and a believer.”.

Though his time heading the ministry was cut short after 8 months, Dr. Ahmed brought steadfast dedication to the role. His championing of youth and sports development left a mark on his team in a short period of time.
Beyond his ministerial duties, Dr. Ahmed spent over a decade serving as MP for Ayawaso East. His career also included military service and working as a dentist, showcasing his commitment to serving Ghana in various capacities.
Though soft-spoken in nature, Dr. Mustapha Ahmed was a firm disciplinarian who led by example. He was a constant presence at gatherings of the Bissa community, using his platform to promote unity and growth.
As both a politician and a dentist, Dr. Ahmed demonstrated dedication in his care for the people and institutions he served, establishing the Palzah medical centre to provide increased healthcare access.
Even in his manner of speaking, he brought people together; his gentle voice compelled all to listen closely.
