Bissas in the Ashanti Region will embark on a health walk through some of the principal streets of Kumasi on Sunday, December 25, to draw the attention of the general public towards the Sukuma Festival.
In exactly 7 days, the region will experience a massive workout, with hundreds of specially designed T-shirts already sold, the organizers have said.
It comes just a day before the holding of the Sukuma festival, slated for the Jubilee Park in Kumasi. and will also mark the birth of the region’s Bissa Keepfit Club.
Dubbed the “Sukuma Walk,” the health exercise will be used to galvanize support as part of building momentum towards the December 26 grand event.
The early morning walk will start at 6am from the Ashanti Regional Bissa Chef’s Palace at NZ1 in Sabon Zongo, go to Aboabo Post Office through the Airport Roundabout, and culminate at the Kumasi Jubilee Park, where a low-intensity aerobic exercise will be held, followed by refreshment.
Speaking to Bissanewsonline.com, regional BDA secretary and member of the organizing committee Zakaria Ayaaba Seone said the event is open to all Bissas of all ages and urged members to come out in their numbers.
“We are embarking on this walk as part of activities to fraternize and socialize among ourselves ahead of the Sukuma festival,” he said.
“The exercise is going to be less intensive as we would want to avoid members getting fatigued since the main festival comes just a day later.”
“So far, we have sold hundreds of T-shirts, and we expect a huge turnout as the walk will be graced by some of our chiefs and elders.”
“We should come out in our numbers to build the momentum for the Sukuma.”
Various sizes and colors of T-shirts have been designed for the event, and according to Mr. Seone, those who would like to acquire some can “contact any of the numbers on the flyer.”
Thousands of people, including chiefs, religious leaders, members of the organizing committee, and iconic Bissa songstress Star Gyal, are billed to participate in the walk that will herald all activities for the successful hosting of the program.
Leadership is expected to address the participants after the exercise at Jubilee Park, the very venue for the festival to be held on Monday, December 26.
The Sukuma festival, which is the first of its kind, is being organized by the Ashanti Regional branch of the Bissa Development Association (BDA) in collaboration with the region’s Council of Bissa Chiefs as an event for Bissas to showcase their culture.
