A member of the Bissa Women’s Wing, Saratu Jenepha Suleiman Yorda, has been called to the Ghana Bar in a colorful ceremony held in Accra on Friday, November 11.

It is a remarkable transition for the mother of three as she moves one step further from the lecture room to the court after successfully passing her professional law examination organized by the Ghana School of Law.

Saratu Yorda, a lecturer at the Nursing and Midwifery Training College, Pantang, was among some 846 newly qualified lawyers who were sworn into office at a ceremony held at the Accra International Conference Centre.

From Health practitioner to legal practitioner, Jenepha Suleiman Yorda Esq

From a humble beginning as a porridge seller on the streets of Awoshie and Santa Maria in Accra, Lawyer Saratu’s climb to the academic and professional ladder looks awesome.

After completing her senior high school education at Asamankese SHS, she set her eyes on breaking the glass ceiling that prevents some women from climbing to the top of workplace hierarchies and finding their footing in leadership roles.

By 2007, she was a practicing midwife after grabbing her first degree in behavioral health science (midwifery) from the University of Cape Coast, and by 2012, she was teaching at the NMTC.

She continued by obtaining her master’s from the University of Ghana in 2017, followed by an LLB at GIMPA, capping an impressive journey to success.

Per the practice, the GLC annually convenes a formal meeting to enrol and call the Ghana Bar candidates who have successfully passed their professional law examination organized by the Ghana School of Law.

And Friday’s event, which is the 59th anniversary in the history of the bar, marked an official moment where an individual is sworn into a bar society or court and obtains licensing to practice law in that jurisdiction.

Lawyer Saratu Yorda thus becomes the second Bissa female to achieve that feat in a spate of five months, after lawyer Fati-Ali Yallah was called to the bar on June 23rd.

In celebrating her success, the midwife-turned-lawyer was joined by a large number of family and friends, including Kir Adam Yurusa of Madina.

Lawyer Saratu is a member of both the Bissa Health Professional Union and the Bissa Women’s Wing.
