The Onion Sellers Association have held a Quran recitation at Bereku Dominase to officially mark the beginning of business at the new location at Bereku Dominase.

It comes exactly two week after they were moved from the Agbogbloshie market as part of a decongestion exercise spearheaded by Greater Accra Minister, Henry Quartey.

The traders of Onion in bulk were issued a deadline to move away by 1st July after several weeks of negotiations between the Ministry and stakeholders in the value chain failed.

While others agreed to relocate to Adjen Kotoku market square in the Ga West, others headed southwards to Central regional town of Bereku, where a vast land has been provided for them to continue their business.

The onion traders predominantly made up of Muslims opted to open their business at the new location.

The event saw a huge presence of chiefs and Muslim clerics who took turns to pray for the success of their business.

Addressing the gathering, Bissa Imam of Greater Accra Hassan Nombre urged the traders to eschew tribalism and work in unison like Islam demands.

“We were all disturbed when the issue came up that you are to be moved to a new location after so many years your business activities at Agbogbloshie,” he said.

“But little did we know that Allah in his one wisdom will provide such a bigger and better place like we have now.

“Today we have joined you together to seek Allah’s blessings for your business with the Qur’an, it is with such unity we will want each and everyone of you to carry on into your activities.

“Work hard to eschew tribalism, which can divide and cause huge damage in your activities.”

The Onion traders had expressed worry over the decision by the Government to move them from Greater Accra where they had been plying their trade at the Agbobloshie Market for  20 years.

About 3,000 traders were moved from the Agbobloshie market, with many of them expression disappointment in the Government.

According to the Regional Minister Honourary Henry Quartey, the de-congestion exercise at the Agbogbloshie market forms part of the “Let’S make  Accra work” project which is meant to improve conditions in the national capital.

But some of the traders felt it was a painful decision to be relocated to smaller venue of Adjen Kotoko, having traded at Agbogbloshie for about two decades with a very good customer base.
