Bissa Chief of New Weija and New Bortianor, Kir Sualla Saeed Sare, has launched the first-ever pilot scholarship scheme, with two tertiary students getting immediate sponsorship to continue their education.
The scholarship program is to assist Bissa students from low- and middle-income families to access education, the Palace says.
It comes amid serious economic hardship in the country, leading to a 15 percent increment in fees by public tertiary institutions for the 2022–23 academic year.
It forms part of a broader Sare Education and Business Empowerment (SEBE) Project established to mitigate some education and career challenges Bissas are faced with.
The two have had their academic fees fully paid and will continue to enjoy the scholarship until they complete their respective courses.
At the launch of the program on Monday, Kir said he introduced the scholarship scheme to cushion the students efforts to attain their academic goals.
Fully funded and managed by the palace, the scheme is expected to benefit about 10 Bissa students from tertiary institutions across the country over a period of 10 years, with at least two Bissa students enrolled each year.
The short Cheque-presentation ceremony at the New Weija Palace saw the beneficiary students express their profound gratitude to the Chief for his wonderful philanthropic service to the Bissas.
“Thank you, Chief Suala Seed Saare, for taking the time out of your life to sponsor us; your generosity will not go unappreciated,” a joint statement read.
“Dear Chief, We are so privileged and humbled to receive this scholarship and would like to express our heartfelt gratitude. Thanks for choosing us.
“We will try all we can to make you proud and Bissa in large.” “May Allah richly bless you.”
