The Bissa Chief of New Bortianor and New Weija, Kir Suallah Saeed Sare, has handed over assorted emergency relief items to Bissas affected by the floods in Weija while praising the “marvelous kinsmen and women for their swift action.”
A first batch of 30 households received food, clothes, and monetary donations in a short ceremony held at the Chief’s Palace at New Weija on Wednesday, October 12th.
Items include student-sized mattresses, bundles of clothes, bags of rice and sugar, boxes of cooking oil, toiletries, blankets, and treated mosquito nets.
Succor has come the way of the flood victims since last week, with the Bissa Development Association launching a crowdfunding appeal that has yielded over GHC 10,000.
Speaking at Wednesday’s ceremony, Kir Sare said the donation was a huge relief to the people who have been in distress since the catastrophic flooding.
“Let me commend our marvelous kinsmen and women for their swift action in ensuring we brought smiles back to the faces of our people in Weija,” he said.
“It’s a great relief to all of us here, and it’s good to see all of us rising to the occasion to help lessen the burden of our people.”
Kir also heaped special praise on the Bissa Development Association (BDA) and its chairman for leading the crowdfunding campaign that has so far yielded over GHC 10,000.
“To the members of the BDA and the chairman, your action was timely, and, on behalf of the people of Weija, I say thank you for your generosity,” he said.
“Your support and kind contributions have at least helped bring life back to normalcy.”
Contributions are still ongoing across the Bissa fraternity, as the chief is set to carry out the second batch of donations in the course of the week.
Present at the donation exercise were the Bissa Imam of Ayawaso North, Yakubu Sambare, and other elders at the Bortianor Palace.
The spillage of the Weija Dam by Ghana’s Ghana Water Company worsened the situation, leading to the loss of several properties worth millions of Ghana cedis.
This latest spillage, which was to flash out excess water to save the dam from collapse due to the recent rains, resulted in flash floods in Weija, which is known to be prone to disaster.
It is said to have submerged hundreds of homes, displaced over 1,000 people, and destroyed items worth millions of Ghana cedis.
The affected areas include Oblogo, Tetegu, New Weija, SCC, Tatop, Sampa Valley, parts of Top Town, and American Farm at Ngleshie Amanfrom.
