Numerous presenters have tried to get me into bed before promoting my music, Bissa songstress Queenzy Baby has opened up, describing it as “disrespectful and demeaning”.
Speaking in an interview on Zaa Radio’s ‘All Inclusive Show’ with Is Hassan Dablee, Baby, known in private life as Aisha Abdul Malik Nyanye, reignited discussions about ethics and professionalism in music promotion.
The Tamale-based artist, who has been a fixture in the music scene for years, spoke openly about facing inappropriate advances when seeking promotion for her work.
“Numerous presenters have tried to get me into bed before promoting my music”, she said.
“Even though I’m not a virgin, I find it disrespectful and demeaning for someone who claims to like me to make such advances when I’m seeking promotion”.
Her revelations bring attention to the persistent issues of sexual harassment and exploitation in the entertainment world, even for established performers.
She expressed her frustration with such behaviour, but with a firm stance against these practices, declaring,
“This issue has significantly impacted our industry. Personally, I would rather quit music than give in to such demands just for promotion”, she stated.
Her statement paints a gloomy picture of the ongoing challenges faced by artists in the industry. Female artists in the country face a myriad of challenges, including societal expectations and cultural norms, which often create additional barriers.
The bold declaration from “Nyumbonno Yile” to take stance against sexual coercion in music industry highlight the need for systemic changes in how artists, particularly women, are treated in the pursuit of their musical careers.
