Head coach of the Ghana Black Meteors, Ibrahim Tanko (Yemboni) has hinted at bolstering his squad with some foreign-based players as the team prepares to face DR Congo in the next stage of 2023 AFCON qualifiers.
Tanko has stated that his team’s goal is to qualify for the next Olympic Games after missing out on the previous edition.
The all-local-based Black Mateors clinched a back-to-back win over Mozambique with a 2-1 victory in the first leg played in Maputo and completed it with a 2-0 win at the Baba Yara Sports Standium.
Tanko, however, said his team is open to every Ghanaian who has what it takes to compete for a position.
“Every player who is playing outside the country and is a Ghanaian qualifies for this team. Why not?” he said during the post-match interview.
“We want what is best for the country. It is not only about the locals, but also about the foreigners. We simply want to have good relationships with both foreigners and locals. There is going to be a mix and I hope we qualify for the AFCON. ”
“We have Fatawu Issahaku, Felix Afena-Gyan, and Kamaldeen Sulemana, and they all qualified for this team. Those who played in the Ghana U20 are also there.
“We are waiting for any opponent, and we are just preparing ourselves.”
“Our target is the Olympics, but we must first qualify for Africa,” Tanko added.
The team has already obtained qualification for the third round of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations U-23 qualifiers following Sunday’s triumph over Mozambique.
They will now face DR Congo in the next round, where they hope to qualify for the 2023 AFCON tournament in Morocco.
