A state funeral will be held next week for former Minister of Youth and Sports Dr. Mustapha Ahmed, will take place on March 10th at the National Mosque in Kanda, Accra, the family has announced.
The well-known dentist and longtime politician received full military honours for his decades of public service to Ghana.
Ahmed, who died at 63, served as a dentist in the Ghana Armed Forces before entering politics in 2001 as a Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso East Constituency.
He represented the Ayawaso East Constituency from 2001 to 2013 under the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
He later represented Ayawaso North from 2013–2017 after the boundaries of the Ayawaso East constituency were redrawn, leading to the creation of the new constituency.
The respected minister died on February 8th in India, where he had travelled for medical treatment.
The late NDC stalwart was also the Bal Naa (Prime Minister) of Ghana’s Bissa ethnic group, a traditional position he held until his death.
His passing has been mourned by many across Ghana, who knew him or were impacted by his work over his 16-year political career and time as a minister.
Dignitaries, colleagues, friends, and admirers from all walks of life are expected to attend next week’s funeral service to pay tribute to Ahmed’s legacy. The Islamic funeral will provide a final opportunity for Ghana to honour his lifetime of service to the nation.
