The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science of Technology (KNUST) branch of the National Union of Bissa Students (NUBS) has held its first meeting for the 2022–23 academic year, with a clarion call for unity.
More than 30 Bissa students turned up for Sunday’s event, held under the theme “Empowering a Unified Bissa Community for a Better Future.”
In his welcoming address, the president of NUBS KNUST Ayambilla Inusah Hamza Gambo expressed his gratitude to all the students and extended a warm welcome to the level 100 students, who were experiencing such a meeting for the first time.
“We are very pleased to welcome those of you that have been with us for a long time now as well as those who are new to the union,” he said.
“Today marks our first working group meeting, and we are proud to be able to host it this time around.”
It is indeed overwhelming to see some of our freshmen students showing interest in such meetings.
“I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all of you who generously helped us make this event a success, especially Dr. Faisal, our sister Ayisha, and our father, Baba Dauda.” “We couldn’t have done it without you,
Sunday’s event was one meant to extend the Zekula culture to the Bissa youth while in school, and it came off in a well-organized manner.
With a common purpose to build a strong force across campuses, various speakers took turns to address the gathering, which was held at the school’s Islamic Center.
Among the speakers were Dr. Faisal Imoro, a medical officer at Kumasi South Hospital; Aisha Adams, a Ph.D. student at KNUST; and Mr. Dauda Dubafoe.
Their speech commenced with the tracing of the original routes of Bissanno, which happened to be the ancient roots in the Middle East down to Burkina Faso and then finally to Ghana.
Further emphasis was placed on the need to be united as a family, bonded by a common purpose and a common interest.
On his part, Dr. Faisal Imoro noted that for national cohesion to be achieved, there was a need for unity.
He urged the Bissa youth to tolerate divergent views in order to enhance national cohesion.
He said unity must begin in homes with families but could equally be achieved right on the campuses, and he called on NUBS leadership to champion the path of unity among students.
He further urged other Bissas in other tertiary institutions to emulate the KNUST in establishing the NUBS across campuses.
The tertiary students were advised to take up leadership positions, which gives them the power to play an active role in decision-making.
Finally, they were challenged to cultivate the habit of speaking the Bissa language at home and anywhere they find themselves.
According to the president Hamza, the student body is “planning to organize another program either within Ramadan or after Ramadan”.
