Bissa students at the Islamic University College of Ghana (IUCG) made history by becoming the first group to successfully defend the Rep Your Culture title, having grabbed the highest number of marks after a sensational display on Thursday.

It was a moment of glory when the Bissas grabbed back-to-back victories in front of their huge fans, who had thronged to the campus to back them up for the 2023 edition.

In a well-rehearsed fashion, the Bissa youth mounted a colorful cultural performance worthy of a champion, and all actions on the ground gave them the title on the bounce.

Their stage performance was on how marriages are conducted in traditional Bissa settings, and they looked slightly better than their close contenders, Mole/Dagbani.

About 16 ethnic groups participated in the keenly contested event organized by the Student Representative Council (SRC) of the IUCG.

And with 74 points, in a fierce contest, Bissas were declared winners for the second time, beating their close competitor bya razor-thin margin of 2 points.

Oranmented in their unique groundnut-made necklaces, headpieces, and wristbands, the Bissas appeared more traditional and they stole the show right from the moment they mounted the stage.

Defending the title was their biggest aim ahead of Thursday’s contest, as it has become a claim to fame in a School where Cultural Anthropology is an important course of study.

Their performance was convincing enough to attract a higher score from the three panels of judges, making it two victories out of two.

They were presented with a plaque and certificate.

The program established last year is gradually becoming a toast for bragging rights, seeking to motivate the contemporary African student to dig deep into knowing their ethnic background.

The cultural pitching brought lots of great personalities, such as chiefs from the various ethnic groups, religious leaders, and government officials, to the campus, some of whom had come to cheer their respective kinsmen and women on for victory.

Among the delegation from the Bissa camp were the Bissa Chief of Madina, Kir Adam Yurusah; the Bissa Chief Nyanyanio; Kasoa Kir Abdulai Zakaria Bayire; Bissa Chief of Ashalaja and the BDA Chairman, Alhaji Shaibu Musah Gutare Zanni.
