The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Bissa Development Association (BDA) has launched “an urgent” appeal to support some kinsmen and women affected by the floods in Weija.

The funds are meant to support the basic needs of about 70 Bissas affected by the floods caused by the opening of some spill gates of the Weija dam by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL).

The BDA Chairman, Alhaji Shaibu Musah Gutare Zanni, said he received information from the Bissa youth chief of Weija, who himself is a victim. In a brief statement to launch the appeal, he stated that:

“Information reaching me indicates that many Bissa families located at Weija are affected by the floods,” he said.

“In a telephone conversation with the Bissa Youth Chief, Suleman Osman Soor, the affected Bissas number about 70, including women and children.

“He emphasized that though they lost everything, their immediate needs are food, shelter, and clothes.

“In view of the above, the BDA wishes to launch an urgent appeal to members to rise to the Zekula spirit and support our kinsmen and women at Weija in their time of need.”

The call for support has been swift in just a day after the flooding occurred. The Bissa community within and outside Ghana has heeded the call and have been generously donating their widow’s might to support their brothers and sisters in Weija.

A little over 7,000.00 GHC has been raised so far, with a call on more members to contribute in kind or cash to the MOMO number: (0244075654 SHAIBU MUSAH).

The BDA executives are scheduled to hand over the funds raised to the victims through the Bissa Chief of New Weija/New Bortianor, Kir Sualla Saeed Sare, at his Palace tomorrow, August 10th, 2022.

This latest spillage, which was to flash out excess water to save the dam from collapse due to the recent rains, resulted in flash floods in Weija, which is known to be prone to the disaster.

It is said to have submerged hundreds of homes, displaced over 1,000 people, and destroyed items worth millions of Ghana cedis.

The affected areas include Oblogo, Tetegu, New Weija, SCC, Tatop, Sampa Valley, parts of Top Town, and American Farm at Ngleshie Amanfrom
