BBC Awards: Meet the Top 50 Bissa Achievers of the year 2023

The BBC selected these 50 honorees after reviewing over 80 nominees of worthy individuals and institutions.

For the second successive year, Brand Bissa Concept (BBC), the operator of Bissanewsonline.com, has released its annual list of Bissa Achievers for the year 2023, honouring the hard work, dedication, and contributions of these individuals and institutions across various fields as well as the Bissa community as a whole.

The BBC Awards identify honorees annually based on their outstanding contributions, demonstrating pioneering leadership, creativity, social responsibility, and a bold vision for advancing Bissa’s future development.

While no physical award is granted, being named is a high distinction, signalling that the honorees’ remarkable achievements are being recognised and celebrated nationwide.

The BBC Awards aim to promote and honour these individuals and institution’s efforts in their respective areas of expertise and impact on the Bissa community. They also serve as a platform for networking, sharing ideas, and fostering unity and solidarity.

Using broad criteria of outstanding achievements, contributions, and community impact, the BBC selected these 50 honorees after reviewing over 80 nominees of worthy individuals and institutions.

This distinguished group of 2023 BBC honorees has been recognised for driving game-changing work, visionary leadership, and lasting impact that enriches Bissa’s legacy. Their stories and accomplishments will inspire young Bissans to become the innovators and trailblazers of tomorrow.

Religious and Traditional leadership

Sheikh Bashir Seidu Sewuni, Bissa Imam of New Jersey, US

Shaikh Bashir Seidu Sewuni is the Bissa Chief Imam of the state of New Jersey

Bissa Imam of New Jersey Sheikh Bashir Seidu Sewuni is being considered for recognition in the Religious and Traditional Leadership category due to his exemplary leadership and commitment to promoting Islamic education and interfaith dialogue while also propagating Bissa culture.

He has been a strong advocate for preserving and promoting Bissa culture. In 2023, he continued with his advocacy by delivering sermons in Ramadan using the Bissa language, helping to propagate the Bissa fraternity both in Ghana and abroad. This has not only facilitated the understanding and appreciation of Islamic teachings by Bissa Muslims but also helped to preserve and promote the Bissa language and culture.

Sheikh Bashir’s philanthropic acts have also had a significant impact on the Bissa community.

Reverend Ishmael Salifu Wusubru Batanga, First Baptist Church

In October 2023, Ishmael Salifu Wusubru Batanga, a devoted and compassionate Bissa kinsman, was ordained as the Reverend Minister of the renowned First Baptist Church, Nalerigu, in a momentous ceremony. He achieved that feat after three long years of immersing himself in rigorous theological studies at the prestigious Ghana Baptist University School of Theology and Ministry, where he obtained a Bachelor of Theology degree.

Kir Tanko, Bissa Chief of the Greater Ashanti Region

In May, Bissa Chief of Ashanti Region Chir Osman Salifu Tanko Yamboni will mark his 45th anniversary at the seat of leadership at his palace in Kumasi on Sunday, marking a record-breaking reign as head of the Bissa ethnic group in the region.

 

Politics/Governance

Dr. Arafat Sulemana Abdulai Yorda, CEO, Zong Dev. Fund

The CEO of  Zongo Development Fund, Dr. Arafat Suleiman Abdulai Yorda was named among the 100 most influential people in Ghana for the year 2023. He was among 100 outstanding Ghanaians across various fields who were acknowledged for their impact over the past year. The Most Influential Ghanaians list recognises individuals excelling in areas like leadership, entertainment, activism, business, politics, science & technology, culture and sports.

Dr Ali Yallah, Georgia Department of Behavioral Health, US 

Dr. Ali Yallah, an information technology expert based in Atlanta, hosted a delegation of Ghanaian parliament for a workshop on technology and state governance.

The day-long event saw the Chief Information Officer at River Edge (Georgia Department of Behavioural Health) lead the visiting delegation through various aspects of leveraging technology to improve governance and service delivery.

Through his tutelage, the select committee, comprising MPs and parliamentary staffers, got the opportunity to understand global best practices on the deployment of technology in the public sector.

Hon. Muhammad Bawah Brimah, Ejura-Sakyedomasi  

The incumbent Member of Parliament for Ejura-Sakyedomasi, Muhammad Bawah Brimah, has been re-elected for the third term as the parliamentary candidate for the constituency following an overwhelming victory in the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) parliamentary primary held on Saturday.

Abdul-Salaam Adam, MP New Edubiase Constituency

In May, the incumbent Member of Parliament for New Edubiase Constituency, Abdul-Salaam Adam, won a second bid to contest the 2024 election on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) after winning the party’s primary in a landslide.

Abdul Rauf “Tongym” Tubazu, NDC parliamentary Candidate, Ayawaso Central Constituency

In May 2023, Abdul Rauf Tubazu was reelected as the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso Central. This was no easy feat, given the highly competitive nature of the primaries. Despite losing the 2020 election, Tubazu was able to increase the NDC’s vote share in the constituency in 2020. This strong performance earned him the party’s nomination again. For displaying dedication, resilience, and leadership, Abdul Rauf Tubazu deserves recognition in the Bissa Achievers Awards. His life story is an inspiration, proving one should never give up on their dreams, no matter the obstacles. Tubazu reflects the spirit of bissas who shape the future of Ghanaian politics.

Ahmed Mumuni Amadu, President, Casely Hayford Hall, UCC

In June, Ahmed Mumuni Amadu, a student at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), won the prestigious President of Casely Hayford Hall. The position of President of Casely Hayford Hall is highly coveted, which requires a significant amount of dedication, hard work, and strategic thinking.

Issaka Mahmud Gampini, TEIN President, ATU

In August 2023, Issaka Mahmud Gampini put his political skills to use by contesting and winning the presidency of the Tertiary Education Institutions Network (TEIN) at Accra Technical University (ATU). Gampini ran an impressive campaign to secure the TEIN presidency within the NDC political structure at ATU.

By leveraging his leadership talents to successfully contest the TEIN presidency, Gampini put his political ambitions to productive use for the NDC. His election victory demonstrates his strong standing as a student leader within the party.

Ayembilla Hamza Inusah, Vice President, TEIN KNUST

Ayembilla Inusah Hamza

Ayembilla Hamza Inusah, immediate past president of the Bissa Students Association at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), in August, won election as Vice President of the school’s Tertiary Education Institutions Network (TEIN) chapter.

In the the keenly contested elections, Inusah put forward an impressive campaign and ultimately defeated a fellow Bissa student to secure the TEIN Vice Presidency in a competitive race.

Activism & Philanthropy:

Kir Suallah Saeed Sare, Bissa Chief, New Bortianor/New Weija

Kir Suallah Saeed Sare, the Bissa Chief of Bortianor/Weija, was recognised for his exemplary leadership at the inaugural Islamic Personality Awards (IPA) 2023 ceremony on November 2nd.

Chief Sare received two distinguished honours at the IPA event held at Accra’s National Theatre. The awards highlighted his commitments to fostering Islamic values and supporting community growth as the leader of Bortianor/Weija’s Bissa people.

On November 12th, Chief Sare further demonstrated his dedication by launching the SEBE project which aims to empower Bissas in the region through entrepreneurship and educational initiatives.

Musah Ahmed Esq, Ghana Bar Association

An exceptional individual who made significant contributions to the organisation of Zekula 2023, a cultural festival celebrating Bissa culture. His unwavering dedication and commitment to the cause were evident throughout the financial backing he gave, however short the call for contribution was.

The active member of the BDA,Lawyer Musah, demonstrated remarkable efforts in ensuring the success of the event, which has eventually had a lasting impact on the community.

His activism in Bissa affairs over the years is highly commendable.

Kir Abubakar Abdul Salaam, Bissa Chief of Amoamang, Ashanti Region.

In August, Kir Salaam led an entourage from the Ashanti Region to Accra to attend the launch of the Bissa Youth Forum. His singular effort in rallying support for the launch has been commended. His efforts were seen as instrumental in driving youth participation and engagement with an important new initiative.

Kir Mustapha Dawuda Lengani, Bissa Chief of Gomoa Fetteh

Kir Mustapha Dawuda Lengani, the esteemed Bissa Chief of the Gomoa Fetteh community, was recently honored with the Community Spirit Award at the prestigious Islamic Personality Awards 2023 (IPA). The IPA’s Community Spirit Award validated Chief Lengani’s positive impact and selfless commitment to uplifting Gomoa Fetteh

Chief Lengani’s recognition highlights the important role traditional authorities can play in shaping cohesive, thriving communities. His inspirational work epitomizes the Bissa value of contributing to society’s advancement.

Academia/Academic Excellence

Samuel Dubinyanle Braimah, Author

The Author

In June, Samuel Dubinyanle Braimah – Elder Kinsman and member of the Bissa Development Association, launched his second book “The Art of Strategic Planning: A Resource Book for Economic and Social Development Planners”. Described as an invaluable guide for policymakers and development experts, the book outlines approaches and tools for effective strategic planning. He leveraged his expertise in writing the book to benefit planners in Ghana and globally. As an opinion leader and accomplished scholar, Braimah is applauded for his literary contributions spotlighting strategic planning.

Abubakar Hadi Zerba, 2023, Valedictorian Islamic University College, Ghana

Hadi

Abubakar Hadi Zerba distinguished himself in March 2023 by being named Valedictorian of his graduating class at Islamic University College-Ghana (ICUG).

Zerba completed his degree in Islamic Studies and earned recognition as the Overall Best student with the highest grade point average in his class.

This prestigious academic honour reflects Zerba’s diligence and mastery of his field of study. As valedictorian, he delivered a moving speech at ICUG’s graduation ceremony on behalf of the entire graduating cohort.

His accomplishment as the exemplary scholar of his class brings great pride and inspiration to his family and the broader Bissa community. He has demonstrated the rewards of academic dedication.

Meyonne Issah Surugu, MA International Affairs, University of Ghana, Legon.

In March, Meyonne Surugu obtained a Master’s degree in International Affairs from the University of Ghana, Legon, demonstrating her determination to break through these barriers and achieve her academic goals. Her accomplishment is a commendable achievement that highlights the importance of addressing barriers to women’s advancement and empowers individuals to break through these barriers and achieve their full potential.

Hamza Inusah Nombre, MSc Organisational Leadership and Governance, University of Ghana, Legon.

In March 2023, Hamza Inusah Nombre attained a significant educational achievement by completing his Master’s degree in Organisational Leadership and Governance from the prestigious University of Ghana Business School. As a Bissa man rising to this high level of graduate education, Nombre demonstrates academic excellence and serves as an inspirational role model. His Master’s degree will enable Hamza to pursue senior leadership positions where he can influence positive change in organisations and governance

Sumaila Sewume Bukari, Valedictorian, Tamale College of Education

In June,Sumaila Sewume Bukari capped off his time at Tamale College of Education in remarkable when he was named the Overall Best Student of his graduating class. By achieving the highest cumulative grade point average in his year group, Bukari earned the prestigious honor of Valedictorian for Tamale College’s 2023 graduands.

As Overall Best Student, Bukari gave an inspirational valedictory speech during graduation events, mark an impactful tenure at Tamale.

His studious nature and well-rounded excellence reflect positively on the entire Bissa fraternity.

Ali-Wuntah Joana, UDS’ Overall Best/Best Graduating Female Student of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies 

Young Bissa lady Ali-Wuntah Joana brought pride to her family and the entire Bissa fraternity during her graduation ceremony at the University of Developmental Studies (UDS) Tamale, on November 18th,

Wuntah was recognized as the Overall Best Graduating Student, having achieved the highest cumulative grade point average across her courses at UDS. She also received an award for Best Graduating Student in the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, reflecting her outstanding results in her specific program.

Her milestone as the Overall Best Student and top graduand in Communication and Media Studies affirms Wuntah as a brilliant young Bissa role model and future leader as her double success symbolises the fruits of academic dedication.

Awudu Issifu Tobinyale, Ghana Immigration Service/Chartered Accountant

Awudu Issifu Tobinyale is a Chief Superintendent at the GIS

In February, senior immigration officer Awudu Issifu Tobinyale, was successfully inducted into the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAG) after obtaining his qualifications to be a chartered accountant.

He was one of 395 graduates who achieved academic excellence from the institute in August 2022.

Asana Awuni Ayubah Yantunor, Ghana National Fire service

In May, Asana Awuni Ayubah Yantunor of the Ghana National Fire Service was elevated to the rank of Assistant Divisional Officer II after successfully completing her Staff Officers Course. Previously holding the position of Assistant Group Officer, Ayubah Yantunor has taken a significant step forward in her career by moving up to assistant divisional officer. Her completion of the intensive staff officer training demonstrates Asana Yantunor’s dedication to her profession and commitment to advancing her skills.

Alimatu Mustapha Zerba, Ghana Prisons

In June, Officer Alimatu Mustapha Zerba was promoted to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Prisons (ASP) after graduating from Cadet Course Intake-31. The promotion ceremony took place on Thursday, June 8th. By successfully completing the cadet training, Officer Zerba had proven her capabilities and readiness to take on greater responsibilities in the prison service. As an Assistant Superintendent of Prisons, she was entrusted with overseeing operations and lower-ranking officers in her designated prison.

Zenabu Issifu Monnie, Ghana Prisons

The event that took place on Thursday, June 8th, also saw Senior Chief Officer Zenabu Issifu Monnie of Nsawam Camp Prisons being promoted and ranked at the same level of Assistant Superintendent of Prisons (ASP). Her successful completion of the Senior Command and Staff Course marks a significant milestone in her prison career.

Mohammed Hashim (Bandaogo), Tamale

Deputy Finance Officer of the Bissa Development Association (BDA), Dauda Mohammed Hashim (Bandaogo), has successfully graduated with a Master of Science in Defence and International Politics from the prestigious Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College.

Raliyatu Dumbo Karim, NVTI, Tamale

In September, Raliatu, a Bissa lady in Tamale, broke through the glass ceiling by successfully completing electrical training at the National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI) in Tamale after a six month program.

Raliatu’s successful completion of electrical training as a Bissa woman is highly significant. By excelling in a technical field predominantly occupied by men, Raliatu helps in breaking down gender barriers and serves as a pioneer for women’s participation in trades like electrical work. Her accomplishment demonstrates to other young women and girls from her community that they too can achieve success and expertise in male-dominated vocational skills like electrical. Raliatu’s graduation is an inspiration, showing the determination to complete rigorous training and gain in-demand technical capabilities that lead to new career opportunities, economic independence, and empowerment.

LEGAL PRACTIONERS 

Shaibu Musah Gutare Zanni, Esq  – Ghana Bar Association

The Chairman of the Bissa and Development Authority (BDA) Alhaji Shaibu Musah Gutare Zanni was called to the Ghana Bar as part of the 2021-year group from the Ghana School of Law. This milestone reflects Gutare’s dedication to balancing his leadership role at the BDA, his job at the Ghana Revenue Authority, and pursuing his law studies all at once. For excelling in his professional work, community service, and academics simultaneously, Gutare deserves immense commendation.

Juggling three demanding roles demonstrates his strong time management, focus, and tenacity. His achievement highlights the spirit of personal growth and community service that makes Bissa leaders like him exemplary.

Achibure Issah Esq. Chief Inspector, Ghana Police

In a further show of Bissa achievement in the legal field, Achibure Issah Esq. Chief Inspector of the Ghana Police was also called to the Bar in 2023 alongside Gutare and others.  Achibure’s admittance as a lawyer, in addition to his role in the police force, brings great pride and honor to the Bissa community. Along with Gutar’s milestone, Achibure’s completion of the Ghana School of Law program demonstrates Bissa’s commitment to excellence in law, justice, and public service.

Mariam Mohammed Luurey Esq, Ghana Bar Association

Following the male lawyers is Mariam Mohammed Luurey, who also reached a significant professional milestone in October 2023 when she was called to the Ghana Bar Association as a licenced lawyer.

Luurey completed her qualifying exams and was officially certified as an attorney, authorised to practice law in Ghana. This accomplishment carries special significance as a Bissa woman rising to join the legal field.

As one of only about five Bissa personalities called to the Bar in 2023, Luurey’s achievement is admirable and trailblazing. She joins a growing list of Bissas pursuing legal careers and demonstrates the possiblity for Bissa women to attain professional success in law. Her milestone inspires more young Bissa women to follow in her footsteps to diversify and strengthen the community’s professional representation.

Bissas across the country celebrate Issah and Zanni for their grit, intellect, and determination to succeed as legal professionals while serving Ghana.

Health Sector

Aisha Bawa Zampaligiri, Outstanding Female Midwife 2023

The medical staff at Manhyia Hospital was voted the 2023 Outstanding Female Midwife at the Ghana Women Awards held on June 4th. She previously won Regional and National Best Nurse of the Year in 2021. Zampaligiri’s continuous achievements, from Best Nurse to Outstanding Midwife, demonstrate her dedication and talent in healthcare. Her honours at both the 2021 and 2023 National Women Awards exhibit her commitment to excellence as a Bissa woman advancing in the medical field.

Fati Iddrisu Bandao, BSC, Midwifery UDS

In November, Fati Iddrisu Bandao also  graduated with a Bachelor of Science (MSC) in Midwifery from the University of Development Studies (UDS) in 2023, adding up to the growing number of Bissas in the health sector.

Palza Medical Centre’s outstanding performance in providing accessible, high-quality healthcare solutions firmly cements their place as a 2023 Bissa Achiever. By investing in first-rate staff, facilities, and services that improve the wellbeing of countless patients and families, Palza Medical Centre lived up to the high standard for impact and innovation set by the Bissa Achievers Award. Their accomplishments in expanding access to reputable medical care, from general practice to specialised treatment, during a socially conscious time are especially worthy of commendation. Palza Medical Centre’s patient-first approach  makes them a standout honoree for the 2023 Bissa Achievers Award.

Education Service

Dahaman Yahaya Zanni, TEWU, Tamale

In October, the Northern Regional Secretary of the Bissa Development Association, Dahaman Yahaya Zanni emerged victorious as the newly elected Regional chairman of  Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

It was a landslide victory for Yahaya in the two-horse race held in Tamale on October 17,  as he  secured an impressive 166 votes, defeating his only contender, Andulai Baba Stanley, who garnered 45 votes.

Adams Seidu Justice, Ghana Education Service

In October, Adams Seidu Justice, hounourably retired from the Ghana Education Service after turning 60, ending an impressive 34 years of dedicated service as a teacher. The  Bissa man single-handedly formed the school’s Cardet Army, and he  was equally honoured by the students of Nafana Presby Senior High School (SHS) in Sampa at a ceremony held at the school campus, leaving behind an indelible mark of fond memories in the lives of countless students and the community as a whole.

Media Personalities

Nimatu Abdulai Yemboni, Alpha Radio Kumasi.

In November 2023, Nimatu Abdulai Yemboni, a broadcaster at Alpha Radio in Kumasi, was named Media Personality of the Year at the Islamic Personality Awards (IPA). Additionally, she played a significant role in organising and promoting the 2023 Ashanti Bissa Sukuma festival held in Kumasi on December 30. As a radio personality, Yemboni has consistently ensured that all Bissa programmes are aired on her shows. She is an active member of the Ashanti region BDA and also a member of the Bissa Women’s Wing. Her unwavering dedication and pride in promoting Bissa culture earn her a spot on the 2023 Bissa achiever list.

Masawudu Jinkor, URA Radio

Masawudu Jinkor, host of the popular Bissa language radio show on Upper East Regional Radio, is a worthy 2023 Bissa Achiever for using his platform to amplify Bissa culture and community initiatives.

In 2023, Jinkor expanded his cultural programming beyond the Upper East by travelling to cover major events like the Sukuma festival. His live broadcasting and post-event coverage shared Bissa traditions with wider audiences.

Jinkor also leveraged his show this year to promote the newly launched Bissa Youth Forum, engaging listeners and driving participation. His consistent promotion of Bissa language, events and organizations reinforces cultural pride.

Through his far-reaching regional radio show, Jinkor helps preserve Bissa identity while catalyzing new growth. His hands-on involvement and travel this past year to support and cover key cultural touchpoints demonstrates his commitment as a broadcaster.

Jinkor’s passion for enhancing visibility of the Bissa community through his reporting and programming makes him a 2023 Bissa Achiever. He represents Bissa excellence in media and serves as an inspirational voice.

Business:

Bissa Bansi Ventures, producers of Perfect Juice and Perfect cool mineral water

The bottles, with their distinctive logo and Perfect Juice’s signature effervescence, will serve as a delightful symbol of celebration and unity at the launch

On August 12,  Bissa Bansi Ventures, producer of the popular Perfect Juice and Perfect Cool drinking water, generously sponsored the launch of the Bissa Youth Forum by providing 200 bottles of Perfect Juice to the event.

The willingness of the CEO, Faisal Yusuf Bansi, to be the beverage sponsor of the event eventually won him the contract to supply drinking water to the forum at a discounted price. The company’s support was instrumental to the success of the event. Moreover, the rapid growth of his business has created jobs and opportunities for the Bissa people. His innovative leadership and social commitment make Bansi a worthy nominee for Business Personality of the Year

Arts & Culture

Bissa Student Association, IUCG

In April, Bissa students at the Islamic University College of Ghana (IUCG) made history by becoming the first group to successfully defend the Rep Your Culture title. They topped the contest with  higher points to grab back-to-back victories for the competition, which was established in 2022. The student body also ensured all preparations were effective in hosting the launch of the Bissa Youth Forum on August 12.

Hajia Alima Guerm, Cultural Ambassador

The acclaimed groundnut jewellery maker, Hajia Alima Guerm, continued promoting Bissa culture and traditions through her iconic handmade ornaments in 2023.

At every major Bissa gathering this past year, Hajia Halima Guerm made an appearance donning her signature groundnut jewellery, which added colour and represented the community’s cultural heritage. The Bissa matriarch Hajia Guerm can be spotted adorned in her unique groundnut ornaments, symbolic of Bissa cultural identity. She is preserving a tradition that also empowers rural women.

Her consistency in promoting Bissa heritage earns her a spot on the 2023 list as a cultural icon.

Hama Zuliehatu Bansi – GMB contestant

Hama Zuliehatu Bansi made an impressive effort competing in TV3’s Ghana’s Most Beautiful pageant, rallying Bissas nationwide to vote for her. She topped the public voting charts but could not advance to the final 16 based on the judge’s decision. Her participation was historic as the first Bissa contestant in the pageant’s history. Though she didn’t make the finals, Zuliehat’s courage to compete and her ability to unite Bissas behind her deserve high commendation. She brought tremendous pride to the community and paved the way for better Bissa representation in Ghanaian arts and culture.

The Beauty Queen had earlier grabbed  the First Runner-up title at the 2023 Miss College Ghana beauty pageant. She also co-emceded the launch of the Bissa Youth Forum in August.

Aishatu Abubakar, Miss SHS 2023

In December 2023, Aishatu Abubakar, daughter of the Bissa Chief of Amoamang, won the Miss SHS 2023 beauty pageant. The student of Kumasi SecTech emerged as the winner of the 4th edition of the pageant after beating out the competition from thirteen other finalists to claim the coveted crown. For serving as an inspiration and advancing representation, Aishatu Abubakar is highly deserving of recognition among the BBC’s honorees of Bissa’s most influential achievers.

The 2023 Zekula Organising Committee, led by regional BDA executives, is being acclaimed for expertly hosting a successful Zekula festival amid the challenging backdrop of tribal conflict in Bawku and surrounding areas.

The 2023 Zekula, celebrated this past May, brought back a cherished ethnic tradition that had been on a three-year hiatus due to unrest.

Through strategic planning and tenacious work to ensure all arrangements, including security, were in order, the organising committee enabled the joyous reemergence of this cultural event. Their ability to deliver a peaceful and well-run Zekula despite obstacles demonstrated remarkable leadership. For restoring this unifying celebration of heritage, the Brand Bissa Concept Awards recognise and celebrate the BDA 2023 Zekula Organising Committee.

The Obuasi Bissa Dancing Troupe shone brightly once again in 2023. The troupe traveled extensively beyond Ashanti to perform their vibrant dances at programs in Accra, delighting audiences. As the foremost Bissa dancing troupe in southern Ghana, they have proudly represented Bissa culture through their energetic performances. By taking their dancing to major events like the Sukuma Festival, they inspire other Bissa communities to follow in their footsteps. Their dedication to celebrating and sharing Bissa culture through dance makes the Obuasi Troupe deserving of recognition among the top 50 Bissa achievers. Their talent and success in promoting Bissa dance and heritage across Ghana is admirable.

Rabiatu Dabre, Cultural ambassador.

Rabiatu Dabre stands out as a 2023 Bissa Achiever for her dedication to preserving and amplifying Bissa culture through dance and traditional crafts like groundnut jewellery. Chosen as a cultural ambassador by the Greater Accra BDA, Dabre works tirelessly to outfit and train performance groups as well as craft ornate groundnut necklaces, bracelets, and more.

Currently, Dabre plays an instrumental role in guiding the newly established Greater Accra Bissa dancing troupe in both their costumes and choreography. She shares her expertise in drilling the novice dancers while outfitting them in traditional Bissa gear, including her own handmade groundnut jewellery.

Through her designs, dances, and crafts, Dabre brings to life the richness of Bissa culture on stages far and wide. With her dedication and passion, Rabiatu Dabre has proven herself invaluable as both a teacher and an ambassador. Her impact makes Dabre a worthy 2023 Bissa Achiever.

Rabiu Zampaligri, Bawku

Rabiu Zampligri became a standout at Sukuma 2023 by showcasing an iconic ancient Bissa farmer costume. With a calabash cap, hand-sewn whites, onions on his shoulders, bare feet, and a haunting gun prop, Zampaligri stunned crowds with his realistic depiction of a traditional Bissa peasant from ancient Ghana.

Having travelled far to authentically represent Bissa heritage, Zampligri’s detailed throwback attire offered a window into the rich cultural past of the Bissa people. The thousands gathered in Kumasi’s Jubilee Park were amazed by his immersive embodiment of a historic Bissa agriculturist.

Zampligri’s one-of-a-kind traditional dress kept Bissa traditions thrillingly alive at Sukuma 2023. His creativity and commitment to simulating an old-time Bissa farmer deserve recognition for making him a highlight of this memorable cultural celebration.

The Ashanti Region Bissa Development Association (BDA) secured their spot in the 2023 Bissa Achiever following their successful organisation of the 2023 Sukuma Festival for the second straight year, helping to reconnect Bissas across Ghana. Through careful planning and promotion, the Ashanti BDA ensured this meaningful event achieved its aim of complimenting the main Zekula Festival by unifying the broader Bissa community, affirming their bonds, and amplifying Bissa culture nationwide.

Coach Ibrahim Tanko (Yemboni), Accra Lions of FC

In March 2023, coach Ibrahim Tanko (Yemboni) led the Black Meteors to qualify for the U23 AFCON in special fashion. His team first managed a difficult 1-1 away draw against Algeria on March 24th in Annaba. Then, on March 28th back home in Kumasi, the Meteors defeated Algeria 1-0 to secure qualification.

This was a major achievement, as Tanko became the first Ghanaian coach to steer a team to qualify for the U23 AFCON tournament twice since it was established in 2011 by CAF as the standalone qualification for the Olympic games. Given Algeria’s strength and talent, pulling off qualification both home and away was no small feat.

Unfortunately, in the U23 AFCON held in Morocco in July, Tanko’s Meteors could not advance past the group stage, which caused them to miss out on qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Nonetheless, Tanko, the son of the Bissa Chief Ashanti Region,  deserves credit for the impressive qualification campaign earlier in the year. Leading the Meteors to grab the AFCON ticket against a difficult opponent in Algeria cements his reputation

Abdul Aziz Nurudeen, Captain, Accra Hearts of Oak

Named the substantive captain of Accra Hearts of Oak football club, one of the nation’s largest and most popular teams. As captain, Nurudeen is leading Hearts admirably, helping the club compete for trophies in the 2023–24 season with his rock-solid midfield genius and leadership on the pitch. Nurudeen’s appointment as captain of such an iconic Ghanaian club at such a young age is a marker of his talent and work ethic. His role as skipper of Hearts, with its millions of passionate fans, makes him a role model for youth and a leader in Ghanaian sports. After years of honing his game, Nurudeen has realised a career milestone as the captain of one of Africa’s most famous football institutions. And all this comes after suffering a turbulent injury, so he missed the entire 2022–23 season.

Abdul Majeed Omar – Gold medalist 2023 Florence Sprint Festival

A Bissa-born Italian athlete, Abdul Majeed Omar, was outstanding in 2023, as he captured a national long jump title in February with an impressive mark of 7.50m. demonstrated versatility a day later by securing bronze in the triple jump at 15.14m. He continued his success by earning gold in the triple jump at May’s Florence Sprint Festival, hitting a new PB of 15.84m in difficult wind conditions.

By earning national titles and podium finishes for Italy, Omar promotes Bissa’s athletic talents abroad. And as an athlete of Ghanaian roots competing for Italy on the national stage, Omar equally serves as an inspirational figure for young Ghanaian athletes.

Below is Omar’s performance in summary

  • On February 4th, won the long jump at the Italian U23 Indoor Championships with a mark of 7.50m.
  • On February 5th, at the same championships, placed 3rd in the triple jump with a distance of 15.14m.
  • On February 18th at the Italian Indoor Championships, I came in 5th in the long jump with a jump of 7.38m.
  • On May 7th at the Florence Sprint Festival, won the triple jump with a mark of 15.84m and had a long jump of 7.42m.
  • On May 14th, at the CDS Assoluto Toscana meet, placed 2nd in the long jump with 7.23m.
  • Finally, on June 4th, at the 2° Citta’ De Lucca, he came 4th in the long jump with a distance of 7.46m.
  • In summary, he showed consistent improvement in the long jump from February to June, moving from 7.38m up to 7.50m and 7.46m. His triple jump also improved from 15.14m to 15.84m between February and May.
