The Volta Caucus branch of the Effia Constituency has received an initial women’s support fund of 50,000 cedis (approximately $4,700) as steps taken to empower women economically within the community gain momentum.
The disbursement comes ahead of the official launch of the Mayor’s Ball initiative, which is designed to boost empowerment at the grassroots level in the constituency.
The programme, held on Monday, was spearheaded by the Municipal Chief Executive for Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly (EKMA), Honourable Abdul Majeed Dokurugu, who conceived the Mayor’s Ball initiative as a vehicle for locally-led economic development.
It drew together chiefs and members of the Ewe community in Effia, the Ageshie group, committed NDC party members, and TEIN patrons from Takoradi Technical University, highlighting growing solidarity between traditional leadership, young people, and progressive development goals.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Dokurugu emphasised his commitment to serving the people rather than personal enrichment.
“I don’t want to amass wealth for myself,” he said.
“My vision is to give back to the community, to ensure that the resources available are channelled towards improving the lives of our people, especially our women who are the backbone of our society.”
When launched, the Mayor’s Ball will channel resources directly to women across different caucuses at constituency level, with organisers indicating that additional tranches of funding are expected to follow.
It reflects a conviction that women’s economic empowerment within specific ethnic groups is fundamental to inclusive development and strengthening local engagement in the Effia Constituency.

Participants at the gathering welcomed the intervention, viewing it as a practical demonstration of commitment to transforming the economic prospects of Volta women in the region.
The Mayor’s Ball is set to be formally introduced in the coming weeks, with indications that similar support will be extended to other caucuses within the constituency structure, including the Zongo Caucus, Akan Caucus, and Muslim Caucus, amongst others. The programme is designed to ensure equitable distribution of resources across the party’s diverse base.

Since taking office last year, the Municipal Chief Executive has introduced various initiatives aimed at bridging gaps between different groups and fostering social cohesion within the municipality.
