The Greater Accra regional Bissa Development Association (BDA) is set to host the 2025 Sukuma Festival, promising a bigger and better celebration for the community.
It marks the second consecutive year the region is organising the festival, building on the success of the inaugural event.
The event, to take place on 4th October at the Alajo Astroturf, is expected to attract more than 3,000 participants, the BDA says.
The festival serves as a cultural bridge for Bissas residing in Greater Accra, allowing them to maintain connections with their ancestral traditions whilst living far from home.
The Sukuma Festival ranks as the second most important celebration in Bissa culture, following the main Zekula festival held in Kulungungu, the traditional Bissa capital.
“This festival is crucial for our community here in Greater Accra,” said the Greater Accra BDA Chairman Shaibu Alale. “It allows our people to connect with their roots and pass on our rich traditions to the younger generation who may not have had the opportunity to experience these celebrations in their full glory back home in the Upper East.”
Reflecting on the festival’s growth since its inception, Mr Alale added: “The response to our first edition was overwhelming and truly heartwarming. We’ve learnt valuable lessons from that experience, and this second edition will be even more vibrant and well-organised. The enthusiasm from our community members has been incredible, and we’re confident this year’s celebration will surpass expectations.”
The event will feature traditional Bissa celebrations showcasing the community’s rich cultural heritage through music, dance, and ceremonial activities.
It underscores the importance of cultural preservation among Bissa diaspora communities and their efforts to maintain traditional practices in urban settings.
Organisers expect a distinguished guest list, including government officials, business leaders, and traditional authorities, reflecting the festival’s growing significance within Ghana’s cultural calendar.
