The Greater Accra Bissa Development Association (BDA) has intensified its efforts to promote the upcoming maiden Sukuma celebration through a series of radio appearances across the region.
On Tuesday, 1 October, Karim Zanzeh, regional vice-chairman, and Humu Dilley, women’s commissioner of the BDA, visited DL FM in the morning to promote the event scheduled for 5 October in Alajo.
Speaking about the upcoming event, Ms. Dilley called for widespread participation, urging both women and children to be part of a memorable day.
“This Sukuma is more than just a festival; it’s a homecoming for our culture in the heart of Accra,” she said.
“I urge every Bissa woman, man, and child to join us in Alajo on 5 October. Your presence will make this celebration truly memorable.”
She emphasised the importance of cultural preservation in the diaspora community. “Living in Accra, it’s easy to lose touch with our roots,” she explained. “This Sukuma is a platform to connect, to show our children the beauty of Bissa traditions, and to strengthen our community bonds.”
The team later moved to Happy FM in the afternoon, continuing their media campaign.
Ms. Dilley highlighted the role of women in the celebration, describing them as the backbone of cultural preservation.
“Bissa women have always been the backbone of our cultural preservation,” she stated.
“I call on all my sisters to come out in their numbers, wearing our beautiful traditional attire, to showcase the strength and grace of Bissa womanhood.”
Addressing the younger generation, she added: “To our youth, this is your heritage. Come and experience the richness of your culture. Let’s make this Sukuma a bridge between generations, ensuring our traditions live on in the hearts of our children and grandchildren.”
Sukuma, is a mini festival for the Bissa diaspora. This marks the first time the event will be held in Ghana’s capital, signifying a major cultural milestone for the Bissa community in Accra.
It aims to celebrate Bissa culture and heritage outside their traditional homelands.
Mr. Zanzeh echoed these sentiments and stressed the festival’s broader significance, urging all Ghanaians to come and witness the beautiful Bissa culture.
“This Sukuma is for Bissas, which offer us the opportunity to showcase our rich culture and contribute to the beautiful traditions that make us unique,” he said.
“But it is also a moment for all Ghanaians to witness as we share happiness and unity as one nation.”
“We therefore invite everyone to join us and experience the warmth and vibrancy of Bissa culture.”
The BDA executives are set to continue their radio tour with an appearance on Iqra Radio on Thursday morning.
The radio campaign will continue in the lead-up to the 5 October celebration, with other executive members scheduled to appear on various stations across the Greater Accra region.
